Sterile Storage and Distribution:
Serves as a senior expert in inventories, replenishes shortages from sterile supply, inspects for sterility integrity for instrument sets and expendable items. Follows up to ensure RME rotates at the appropriate intervals, communicates needs for restocking outdated supplies, and maintains stock levels of critical and semi-critical RME for wards, clinics, and the CLC. Ensures staff operates automation equipment according to SOP, facility procedure to prepare, store, retrieve or process information. Trains staff and completes staff competencies. Monitors and reports to Chief Quality Assurance testing completion and results. Decontamination:
Coordinates the assignments to receive a full range of reusable medical supplies, instruments and equipment from hospital wards, clinics and CLCs. Ensures staff decontaminates reusable items by determining the appropriate method for removing gross contamination by means of manual cleaning procedures. Reviews adherence of staff in relation to disassembly, decontamination, and infection control practices of items in accordance with facility protocol. Ensures staff operate automated reprocessing equipment such as the ultrasonic cleaner and washer/disinfectors in accordance with the device Instructions for Use (IFU) and SOP. Performs random quality audits by examining items and instruments for damage, deterioration or imperfection. Reports and/or conduct training episodes to address any non-compliances. Provides assistance in first echelon maintenance and/or troubleshooting reprocessing equipment. Maintains accurate written records of quality and preventative maintenance of such equipment. Assembly and Sterilization:
Ensures that staff follow all device specific Instructions for Use (IFU) and set forth Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) while conducting assembly and sterilization procedures. Conducts rounds to review staff adheres to facility regulations regarding application and removal of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Validates skill level of staff to ensure the efficient assembly of a wide variety of instrument trays and sets used for medical procedures including the facility and CLC. Coordinates the workflow for assembly to include prioritization from a variety of sterilization phases. Ensures that daily spore testing and sterilizer control measures as it relates to quality assurance principles of sterilization and elimination of cross contamination and determines whether items are free of microorganisms. Monitors and reports biological testing for each sterilization cycle. Accepts accountability for the maintenance of all preparation and packaging quality data. Researches, recommends, and applies the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Federal Drug Administration (FDA) standards as they pertain to sterile processing and the distribution of medical supplies. Lead, Preceptor and Mentor:
Assists the Chief SPS with writing, reviewing, editing SOPs. Assists Chief SPS by maintaining a survey readiness department. Assists the Chief by entering purchase orders for supplies, Critical and semi critical RME and other items as designated by Sterile Processing Special funding. Responsible for developing formal and informal written education plans for the SPS training program, in collaboration with the SPS Chief and in compliance with accreditation organizations and VHA- specific requirements as well as medical center policies and procedures for SPS and related staff Facilitates training through educational programs and job specific instruction, facilitating the application for new technology of RME by training and competency new and existing staff, through precepting and mentoring. Documents and assesses staff training to identify areas of strength and need, identifying opportunities for improvement, making recommendations and prepares reports based on findings. Oversees work and will assist management with the distribution and prioritization of workload among employees in accordance with established workflow and/ or job specializations Assists with the assignment of tasks as necessary to provide new employees with the experience and training required to obtain a full performance and advanced performance level. Provides information to management officials concerning performance issues, assignment changes and task completion. Instructs employees on work related activities, policies, procedures and goals. Monitors and reports to Chief monthly Quality Assurance testing in SPS areas. Ability to analyze data and ensure data completeness. Effectively communicate with technical and professional staff and resolve problems with equipment that may occur. Work Schedule:

Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable. Creditable Experience Knowledge of Current MST Practices. To be creditable, the experience must have demonstrated the knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) associated with MST responsibilities. Experience satisfying this requirement may be paid/non-paid employment as a MST. Quality of Experience. Qualifying experience must be at a level comparable to MST experience at the next lower grade level of the position being filled. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, administrative independence, complexity (difficulty) and range of variety as described in this standard at the specified grade level and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. Part-Time Experience. Part-time experience as a MST is creditable according to its relationship to the full-time workweek. For example, a MST employed 20 hours a week, or on a time basis would receive 1 full-time workweek for 2 weeks of service. Grade Determinations:
In order to qualify at the GS-07 grade level for the 622 series, you must have one-year of specialized experience at the next lower grade level (GS-6) within the aforementioned series. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to:
Acting as a preceptor and mentor of novice and developmental MSTs, training and monitoring completion of competencies, revise work schedules, monitoring and reporting on the status of the work, assigning work to staff based on experience, monitoring and reporting on the status of work; writing, reviewing, and updating Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), reviewing work in progress or spot checks work not requiring review to ensure completed work meets SOP, VHA Directives and standards on such things as work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines, providing information to Chief SPS concerning performance issues, assignment changes and task completion, perform independently the full range of duties required to decontaminate, clean, sterilize, process, prepare, store, and distribute medical supplies and equipment used in all areas of the facility and CLC, performing comprehensive sterilization testing procedures utilizing line microorganisms and chemical reactive testing to ensure all sterilization parameters are being met by sterilizer chambers, coinciding with these procedures is the compliance to strict, accurate record keeping of sterilizer functions and test, inclusive of reading and interpreting sterilizer charts, gauges and controls, being adept at detecting machine malfunction while knowing appropriate reporting procedures. Ability to lead individuals, manage priorities, and schedule work assignments. The Lead MST works in support of the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) management team. Distributes and prioritizes workload among employees in accordance with established workflow and/or job specializations. Assures an even workflow and distribution of the workload. Revises work schedules to meet anticipated and unanticipated changes in the workload. Assigns work to staff based on experience and training needs. Monitors and reports on the status of work. Ensures SOPs and SPS mandates are followed during the performance of workflow. Reviews work in progress or spot checks work not requiring review to ensure completed work meets supervisors' instructions on such things as work sequence, procedures, methods, and deadlines. Assesses the quality and quantity of work by reviewing the cleaning, reprocessing, and distribution of technical medical equipment, material and instrumentation. This work is performed in various settings:
decontamination, preparation, clean sterile supply (preparation) and in other services and departments throughout the medical facility/campus. The incumbent may be required to work in areas that are hot, cold, drafty and poorly lighted. The employee is subject to the possibility of falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, and other injuries from material handling equipment. The work requires standing and walking during the entire workday and frequent bending and lifting of packages (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds). The work requires dexterity and visual acuity for manipulating, disassembly and assembly of instrumentation.
