Job Description - General Manager
Books-A-Million Stores
Job Summary
The General Manager is in charge of the day to day operation of Books-A-Million stores as a Manager On Duty in
conjunction with the management team to maximize sales and customer service, and oversees the execution of all
aspects of store operations by providing effective and efficient leadership, achieving maximum sales and profits,
controlling budgetary expenses, managing personnel through training and development, and overseeing every area of
store
operations.
Duties and Responsibilities
General Managers report to a District Manager.
Sales / Profitability
Maximize sales and profits for all departments to insure store goals are achieved
Works with the Management team to achieve a grade of B or higher on each GEAR.
Customer Service
Ensure high levels of Customer Service
Maintain a high level of visibility on the sales floor to customers and Associates while monitoring all areas of the store.
Schedule
Using the Scheduler Spreadsheet, complete the Associate Schedule on a weekly basis, to be posted 2 weeks out, by
Thursday each week.
Ensure Associate schedule adequately covers for Sales, Customer Service, and Tasks.
Hiring
Review and manage candidates in the Taleo hiring system weekly or more as needed.
Perform second interviews to select and hire Associates.
Maintain an adequate level of Associates who are ready to fill key positions.
Training / Coaching
Train Management Staff
Develop each Co-Manager's understanding of the objectives to be accomplished and the authority to complete said
goals.
Identify and implement the standards of performance for each job in the store and work with the Associates to achieve
maximum performance.
Evaluate Associates' job performance and provide feedback to the Associate as well as for the District Manager.
Leadership
Plan, organize, direct, and control store activities with the assistance of other store management.
Facilitate effective communication to all store Associates through Daily Briefings, weekly and monthly meetings.
Enhance our reputation as a friendly, service-oriented place to shop where the customer is always first.
Represent the company by establishing and maintaining good community relations.
Maintain a self-development program to improve knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Store Conditions
Operate a straight, neat, and clean store.
Maintain a well-merchandised store in compliance with all Directives and Policies.
Loss Prevention
Maintains Inventory Shrink of 1% or less
Perform Refund Verification calls to monitor the level of customer service and Loss Prevention issues.
Complete additional assignments made by the District Manager
Qualifications - External
Job Requirements
Employed with Books-A-Million at a management level for at least 6 months. (Can be waived for new stores.)
21 years of age or older.
Positive background check.
Strong customer service skills.
Demonstrated and continued adherence to the all Books-A-Million Policies and Procedures, including the Code of
Conduct and Customer Service Policy.
Demonstrated ability to act in a mature and conscientious manner.
Recommended Management Assessment score (for new hires and promoted associates only)
Completion of all Assistant General Manager Training (for new hires and promoted associates only)
Worked as a Caf Manager for a minimum of 4 weeks (for new hires and promoted associates only)
Scheduling Requirements
General Managers follow the 3 or 4 Manager Rotation schedule, depending on the number of manager in the stores.
The Rotation Schedules require that the General Manager work every Monday and Tuesday in order to effectively
